DIMITRIS ALEXANDROS FATOUROS

PAINTER - AUTHOR

Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros was born in Athens on the 28th of October 1946. He lives and works on the island of Hydra in Greece. He has studied interior decorating and graphic designing at the “Harzburger Dekoschule” in Germany and painting at the "ACADEMIE ROYALE DES BEAUX ARTS" in Brussels.

He appears for the first time on the painting scene during the Greek Sea Painting Exhibition in Piraeus in 1973.

In the same year he shows his artistic skills in Athens as well when he organizes for the first time an exhibition of his own works with, once again, themes on the Greek sea and more specifically on Hydra. Later he starts his artistic activities on Hydra with an exhibition of his paintings. The island becomes an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the artist.

The uniqueness of Hydra with its indescribable beauty and its glorious past lets itself - in full confidence - be reflected in his works, according to an art critic who characterized the artist as the ‘painter of Hydra’. Hydra and the sea, in all the extent of their tales and myths, remain the keystone of his creations.

Dimitris Fatouros has participated in many collective exhibitions in Greece and every year he shows his new creations during an individual exhibition in Hydra.

In 1980 he exhibits his artistic works during the ‘Frankfurt Instructive and Artistic Program’ in the German city where he receives lots of enthusiasm of both the public and art critics.

In 1981, on an invitation of the Mayor of Ludwighafen, he exhibits his works during the ‘Greek Week’ in the city’s town hall. The Mayor awards him with the medal and the blazon of the town ‘for the piece of Greek sea and sky he offered to Greeks and Germans’ as he characteristically mentioned in his speech.

In 1983 he works together with the great painter Yiannis Tsarouchis and within the same year he presents his first book with the title ‘AN ANGEL IN MY YARD’ in the Press Center for Foreign Correspondents in Athens. Yiannis Tsarouchis, a warm supporter of his writing and paintings, gives him an extra recommendation for his book that has also been bought by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

In 1985 he publishes his second book with the title ‘TRITON’. It has gained excellent critical remarks. Also this book is in the collection of the Greek Ministry of Culture. In the “Lexicon of Greek Painters” that is published by MELISSA, Fatouros is mentioned in the 4th volume on page 454 – 455. Mr. K. Mitsakis, professor of modern Greek Literature at the Athens University, also shows interest in the work of Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros and mentions him in his book “Modern Greek Literature in the 20th century”, page 35 and 37.

In 1988 his novel ‘An Angel in my yard’ appeared in an Italian translation in the authoritative magazine for literature “Greek Letters, a Modern Greek Annual for Literature”.

From 1986 till1988 Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros works and exhibits his paintings on Hydra. His work is also presented in many magazines and newspapers.

Extracts from ‘AN ANGEL IN MY YARD’ were performed by the English Shakespeare Group of Actors directed by Douglas Hank on Hydra in the summer of 1989.

In 1990 he shows 40 paintings at the ‘Centre Interinstitutionel Europeen’ in Brussels together with an album of ’12 Little Pictures’. In the meantime he works on his third book “WHENEVER YOU STARE AT HIGH MOUNTAINS” with illustrations by the author himself and ready for publication soon.

In 1991 Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros steps into another artistic field in his endless aim to make art more widely known: he founds on Hydra the Independent Center for Greek Arts (A.K.T.Y.)

The A.K.T.Y. is constantly operating with a varied program of different artistic events in a building specifically restored for this purpose in the main harbor of the island. It widely promotes young painters and sculptors.

In 1992 he contributes to the activities of the A.K.T.Y. the publication of a monthly magazine with the title ‘A.K.T.Y.’ to bring the readers up-to-date with all the artistic events that take place on the island.

The work of Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros has spread out its wings all over Greece and Europe and the “European Biographical Directory” in Brussels has requested his permission to include him in their lexicon concerning ‘distinguished personalities of Europe’. His curriculum vitae has been presented in the 9th edition of the year 1991 – 1992.

In 1993 Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros is invited to organize the Cultural Center of Elassonas (Larisa) and give a review of his works. It is considered a unique event for the whole area of Thessalia and in general for northern Greece.

In the years 1994 till 1997 Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros writes and illustrates his books “THERE ARE TIMES THAT … THERE ARE MOMENTS THAT …” and “SUFFERING WIND”

Also he makes the illustrations for the poetry collection “Hai-Kou” of Christos Dimitroulopoulos which includes “Alexander the Great”, “Fairytales of Thraki” and “Tirando”.

He is in charge of the complete design of the front cover of “Greek Letters” that is published annually by the Hellenic Society of Translators of Literature.

In 1998 he is organizing a retrospective review of his work during an exhibition at the A.K.T.Y on Hydra, Greece.

In 1999 the City of Hydra invites him to show his latest works in “A window on Hydra”, an exhibition that takes place on the island in the Hall for Arts and Concerts "Melina Mercouri".

In 2000 the NAUTICAL CLUB OF HYDRA invites him in an honorary presentation of his work - HYDRA 30 YEARS -

In 2003 he is invited by the Naval Museum of Crete during the manifestations for the launching of the first Minoan vessel of experimental archaeology  in Hania and exhibits his collection of paintings “Seagulls and Sea”. One of these paintings is now included in the Museum’s collection of artwork. The Naval Museum of Crete honored Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros with a medal.

In 2004 he exhibits his collection of "EPHEMERA" in the Hall for Arts and Concerts "Melina Mercouri".

The work of Dimitris Alexandros Fatouros in the artistic as well as in the literary field is characterized by a personal inventiveness that leaves it untouched by any other influences and effects.
